The #1 Reason You Don’t Have Enough Time

“I’m so busy! I don’t have enough time!”

At some point, we’ve all felt overwhelmed by impending deadlines and feeling that we have more to do than we have time in which to get it all done. This can result in increased levels of stress and a downward spiral of ineffectiveness, leaving one feeling still more overwhelmed and stressed out.

According to the The American Institute of Stress, work is the number one cause of stress in American. Surprised? Me either. makes 2 additional observations are very telling:

  1. The biggest cause of stress at work is workload – i.e. too much to do and not enough time to do it.

  2. “Stress is a highly personalized phenomenon.” Studies have revealed that levels of stress are dependent upon an individual’s perception.

Perception is Reality

“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour and it seems like a minute. That’s relativity.” – Albert Einstein.

Einstein’s statement above illustrates a beneficial point: Time changes relative to our perception. So, while we can all certainly strife for greater efficiency (and perhaps should), a huge help in preventing overwhelm stemming from not having enough time, is to give attention to our perception. In other words, believing you always have enough time will become your reality; feeling that you will never have enough time will also come true. Some moments seem to stretch out and last longer than the minutes and seconds of which they are comprised. In other cases, time “flies” by.

The Real Problem

I enjoy a good debate about the how finite or infinite time is as a resource at our disposal. However, let’s set that aside and agree that the nature of time is not our problem, but rather our response to our perception about time. Stress resulting from our perception of time is unwanted, uncomfortable, and indicates a change must be made.

The solution isn’t “finding” more time. The solution lies in not responding negatively to our circumstances. But how in the world can we challenge our perception of time? For the next week, begin to become aware of all the times during each day that you have negative thoughts about perceiving limited time.

Stop going down a road that leads to stress.

Refuse to voice a complaint about having limited time, rather, make a statement internally or out loud that shows confidence in an alternate perception.

Try this powerful statement: “I have all the time I need.”

Then take a long deep breath and smile.

Let a new reality set it.

You will always have all the time you need.
